Burton Station residents wary of outlet mall impact

Shirlee Dunbar sat in her living room Tuesday evening and watched the Northampton Boulevard traffic crawl by.

Rush-hour gridlock on the busy thoroughfare, which leads to Interstate 64 and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, is a daily sight for the longtime resident of Burton Station, a small, historically black neighborhood between the boulevard and Norfolk International Airport.

Burton Station is getting water, sewer lines

The whir of a generator, clank of an excavator's claw and cascading of gravel were more than just construction noise to the residents of Burton Station on Friday. They were the sounds of a long-awaited promise finally being fulfilled.

The city broke ground last month on a $1 million project to bring water and sewer lines to the small neighborhood in the northwest corner of Virginia Beach. Burton Station's residents have been waiting decades, getting by on septic tanks and well water.
